Richard Luckhardt

I started riding in Portland, CT with Barbara Johnson and in Middletown, CT with Frank Cunningham. I was a member of the Glastonbury Pony Club and rode with Jan Royce Conant. I showed in the junior jumpers and rode with Doug Merrifield at River Farms in Avon, CT. I graduated from UCONN where I played some polo. I got very involved in off the track TBs, retraining them for the show ring as hunters and jumpers. After college, I went to work in corporate America for American Airlines and Sabre Holdings. I rode and showed as an amateur with Cliff Gustafson in southeastern CT. I spent a lot of time foxhunting and hunter pacing with the MA and NY hunts and was lucky enough to hunt in England and Scotland.

I continued to show around southern New England and Florida. I met my wife, Priscilla, horse showing and we continued showing and had children who grew up showing. We bought a farm in North Stonington, CT, where we all rode, and my kids rode and showed ponies, and children’s hunters and jumpers. I eventually left corporate America and became a professional horseman. I became manager of the USEF A rated Mystic Summer Festival and Mystic Summer Premiere and numerous 1 day rated and schooling shows. I was named coach for IHSA Equestrian Teams at Connecticut College and the United States Coast Guard Academy.

I am now the full time General Manager of the Mystic Valley Hunt Club, a horseshow, boarding, and lesson facility in Gales Ferry, CT. Throughout the years, I had been judging unrecognized horse shows until I received my NEHC judges card and then my USEF judges card in hunters, equitation, and jumpers. I’ve judged all over New England, New York, New Jersey, and  earlier this year in Bermuda. I’ve done everything from schooling through USEF rated shows, IHSA, IEA, and Equitation Finals. I also have my USEF Course Design cards in Hunters and Equitation, and Jumpers as I manage and course design at shows at Mystic. I recently designed the courses for my first USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Shallowbrook Horseshow.

I am President IHSA Zone 1 Region 5, the Connecticut Region. I sit on the IHSA Board of Directors. I am a former member of the USHJA Zone 1 Hunter Committee where I served as treasurer. And, most recently I was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Hunter Jumper Association where I serve on the Standards Committee.
